Francisco de Zurbarán
1598-1644 Spain/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Francisco de Zurbarán was born in Fuente de Cantos. His first tuition was with the artist Luis de Morales, or Divine Morales, Antonio Palomino because his works were specifically on religious subjects. Then, according to Palomino, he went to Seville, where he studied under one Doctor, Pablo Roelas, possibly Juan de las Roelas, who initially was Flemish and settled in Seville. Zurbarán achieved a high reputation in Seville for his work, and the church awarded him several commissions. He worked for the Royal Court in Madrid from 1634 to 1635 and eventually retired there in 1658. He was influenced later in his career by Bartolomé Estéban Murillo. Aside from religious works, he was a painter of still-lifes, most notably fruit and pottery. |
