|
Brief Biography-Peder Henrik Kristian Zahrtmann was born in Rønne, Denmark in 1843. He studied at the Sorø Academy before moving to Copenhagen, where he entered the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1864. He is remembered chiefly for a series of paintings concerning Leonora Christina. He regularly travelled around Europe, where he spent most of his time in Italy. With his contemporary, Peder Severin Krøyer, he helped establish the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskolen, The Artists’ Free Study School, which broke from the rigid traditions of the Academy; it eventually became known as Zahrtmann’s School. He died in Frederiksberg in 1917. |
