Caspar Wolf

1735-1783 Switzerland/Sturm und Drang

Brief Biography-Caspar Wolf was born in Muri, Aargau, Switzerland, in 1735 and lived in an era known for the Sturm Und Drang movement of literature and the arts. His most noted master was Philip Jacques de Loutherbourg, whom he studied under in Paris. The connoisseur Abraham Wagner commissioned him to do two-hundred paintings of Switzerland, of which he completed one hundred and fifty before he died in relative poverty in Mannheim in 1783. His works are mainly dramatic landscape scenes.
