|
Brief Biography-Édouard Vuillard was born in Cuiseaux in 1868 and moved with his parents to Paris in 1877. He studied at the Académie Julian, and after a couple of attempts, the École des Beaux-Arts admitted him in 1887, where his master was Tony Robert-Fleury, followed by the academic painter Jean-Léon Gérôme. Pierre Bonnard helped him establish the Nabis group of avant-garde painters in 1889, which lasted until 1900. The members were mainly painters from the Académie Julian interested in abstract art. Vuillard successfully painted commissions for public buildings, portraiture and graphics for theatre. His style became categorised as Intimism, which emphasises intimate domestic scenes. Japonisme and woodblock prints also influenced his paintings. |
