|
Brief Biography-Francisco Varela, born and lived in Seville, was a student of Juan de las Roelas. His Martyrdom of Saint Vincent is in the parish church of Saint Vincent, and an altarpiece to Saint Michael is in the convent of La Merced. Varela’s early mannerist style later transformed into naturalism, and he also painted historical scenes. Bryan’s dictionary states he was employed in 1618 by the Carthusians of Santa Maria de las Cuevas to make copies of specific pictures painted by Gaudin for the Grande Chartreuse, Grenoble. He died in Seville in 1645. |
