Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein

1751-1829 Germany/Neoclassicism

 

Brief Biography-Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein belonged to a large family of painters, and his uncle Johann Jacob tutored him in Hamburg. He studied the old masters in Holland, Germany and Italy and became a successful portraitist. In Rome, he moved to history painting, and in 1789 he befriended Goethe, who he painted in 1788. In Naples, he was director of the Naples Academy of Fine Arts from 1789 to 1799, after which he returned to Germany and settled in Eutingen im Gäu.
