Brief Biography-Jeremiah Theus was born in Switzerland in 1716 and went to America in 1735. In Charleston, South Carolina, he became a prominent painter, mainly of portraits, and he also engaged in coach painting. In 1774, Theus opened a drawing school for Young Ladies and Gentlemen. He painted miniatures, but most pictures were 30 X 25 inches. The clergy commissioned him to gild and paint the steeple of Saint Michael’s Church. Theus remained in Charleston until he died in 1774. |
