Joseph-Benoit Suvée
1743-1807 Belgium/Neoclassicism
|
Brief Biography-Joseph Marie Vien taught Joseph-Benoit Suvée from Bruges alongside Jacques-Louis David. Suvée won the Prix de Rome in opposition to David in 1771; they were competitors in Neoclassicism throughout their lives. After a spell in Rome, where he taught Pierre-Narcisse Guérin, he returned to Paris and became a painter to the King. That engagement was to end when David was the dictator of the arts. In 1801, Napoleon appointed Suvée to Rome, where he became the Academy Director; he spent his last years in Rome. |
