Thomas Sully

Brief Biography-Thomas Sully was born in Horncastle in 1783, and his family moved to America in 1792. He studied under Gilbert Stuart in Boston and later under Benjamin West in London, where Sir Thomas Lawrence influenced him. He achieved considerable success in Philadelphia, and the Saint George Society commissioned him to paint Queen Victoria on his return study trip to London. The portrait is in private hands and bequeathed to The New York Met. |
