Dominic Serres

Brief Biography-Dominic Serres from Auch, Gascony in France, travelled to Spain as a young man and went to sea, becoming a Captain. When he sailed to Cuba, he was captured by the British and eventually became a commander in the Royal Navy.
He settled in England, where he trained as a painter in Northamptonshire and for a spell under Charles Brooking in London. He worked for a publisher detailing the Seven Years’ War and painted scenes from the American War of Independence. He wrote the acclaimed book Liber Nauticus about marine drawing during his career. His works led to him being a founder member of the Royal Academy, and he subsequently was made Marine Painter to King George III. |
