Brief Biography-Godfried Schalcken, a fine painter, or Fijnschilder, was born in Made, South Holland, in 1643. He grew up in Dordrecht and spent time between there and Leiden. He was first a disciple of Samuel Dirksz van Hoogstraten, followed by Gerard Dou, who greatly influenced him. Schalcken was primarily a portraitist famed for his tenebrist candlelight scenes. He spent six years in England, where he painted William III, before settling in the Hague, where he remained. Schalcken was a highly successful painter throughout his career. |
