|
Brief Biography-Sano, (Mencia or Ansano) di Pietro was born in Siena in 1406. He was a painter of frescoes and miniatures and was an illuminator. Sano was a disciple of Stefano di Giovanni (Sassetta), and his subjects were primarily religious, comparable in content to Fra Angelico. He held a large studio in Siena and contributed his talents to most of the churches in Siena and nearby towns. His most noted work in Siena is the Coronation of the Virgin in the Sala di Biccherna of the Palazzo Pubblico. However, scholars of the twentieth century held his later paintings in lesser esteem than his earlier works. |
