Fray Juan Sánchez Cotán

1561-1627 Spain/Baroque

Brief Biography-Fray Juan Sánchez Cotán, born in Orgaz, was a remarkable still life painter of bodegones (still lifes with pantry items) who influenced many Spanish artists, including Francisco de Zurbarán. Blas de Prado tutored him, whose style he adopted, and he found a successful career in Toledo. Then, in 1603, he entered the Carthusian monastery in Granada, where he painted religious subjects, and while working in Seville, he became acquainted with Juan de las Roelas. Palomino stated that he painted a Crucifixion for the convent’s refectory, so deceptive in its appearance that birds attempted to perch on the cross.
