Pierre-Auguste Renoir
1841-1919 France/Impressionism
|
Brief Biography-Pierre Auguste Renoir from Limoges began painting on porcelain in a Paris factory at thirteen. Throughout that period, the paintings of Boucher, Watteau, Fragonard and Delacroix in the Louvre inspired him to take up art. In 1861, he received tuition in the atelier of Charles Gleyre alongside Claude Monet, Frédéric Bazille and Alfred Sisley. Gustave Courbet impressed him, and Monet significantly influenced his work when they later painted together at Fontainebleau.
In 1883, The art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel began to sell many of his works, and from here, Renoir achieved considerable success. From 1879 onward, he visited Africa and made several trips around Europe, studying the great masters. His style eventually drifted from impressionism to classicism, and later his subjects moved towards painting nudes. He spent his elderly years in Cagnes, painting some of his most noted works despite arthritis. With the help of two assistants, he indulged in sculpture and created many pieces. He is today considered one of the originators of impressionism.
