Brief Biography-Henrique César de Araújo Pousão was born the son of a magistrate, in Vila Viçosa. Both his grandfather Caetano Alves de Araújo and his paternal great-grandfather António Pousão were painters. He grew up in Elvas and Barcelos. His father enrolled him in the Porto Academy of Fine Arts in 1872, and he was there until 1880. After that, he worked in the Porto Art Centre until he went to Paris in 1881. He gained a state scholarship to study Landscape Painting at the École des Beaux-arts under Adolphe Yvon and Alexandre Cabanel. During his stay in Paris, he became very sick with bronchitis and eventually took the advice to go to Italy for his health. He painted in Rome, Capri, Naples and Anacapri. His worsening health forced him to return to Portugal, where he visited his father in Olhão before going to Vila Viçosa; he passed away due to lung disease in 1884. Many of his paintings can be seen in the Soares dos Reis National Museum. |
