Brief Biography-Giovanni Cavalière Paolo Panini was born in Piacenza in 1691. He was one of the most noted Vedutista painters of his time, working mainly in Rome. First, he studied with Benedetto Luti in Rome, and Giovanni Ghisolfis' works became his main inspiration. His style is partly related to Salvator Rosa also. According to some critics, he executed his architectural paintings well; however, his elegantly produced figures can be out of proportion to his buildings compared to Ghisolfi. Nevertheless, he is considered the first principal painter of ruins. He taught at the Académie de France, where he was a professor of perspective and was the director at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. Hubert Robertworked with him and took great inspiration from his works. Other Vedutista painters who he influenced were Canaletto and Bernardo Bellotto. |
