Pedro Núñez de Villavicencio
1640-1700 Spain/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Pedro Núñez de Villavicencio was born in Seville into a noble family and became a chevalier of the Order of Saint John. He indulged in painting merely for amusement and worked under Murillo for instruction, with whom he became a close friend. He was obligated as a knight to travel, and in Naples, Núñez took directions from his fellow Knight Matteo Preti, who helped him with chiaroscuro. When he returned to Spain, he joined Murillo, with whom he resided, and like Meneses Osorio, his work came so close to Murillo’s that their figures were difficult to differentiate. Núñez also excelled in portraiture and aided Murillo in founding the Seville Academy of Painting. He died in Seville in 1700. |
