Peeter (Pieter) Neefs (Neeffs) the Elder
c. 1578 - c. 1656 Flemish/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Peeter Neefs the Elder was born in Antwerp c. 1578. He was a disciple of Hendrik van Steenwyck the Elder, a painter of church interiors. Like his mentor, Neefs painted churches in Antwerp, and in 1610 the Guild of Saint Luke admitted him into the group. He used candlelight to create chiaroscuro effects, and his use of perspective led to architectural precision. Painters such as Velvet Brueghel and David Teniers the Younger (Possibly Teniers the Elder) inserted staffage into Neef’s works. The date of his death after 1657 is unknown. |
