Nanni di Banco
c. 1387-1421 Italy/Renaissance
|
Brief Biography-Nanni di Banco was the son and pupil of Antonio di Banco, a sculptor with whom he worked at the Cathedral in Florence. He was a contemporary of Donatello, who did commissions with him at the Cathedral, one being David by Donatello and Isaiah by Nanni. His most noted work is the Quattro Santi Coronati (Four Crowned Martyrs) 1408, at Or San Michele (Orsanmichele). Nanni di Banco was one of the first artists responsible for the evolution from Gothic to Early Renaissance art. He may have equalled Donatello had he not died young in 1421. |
