Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
1617-1682 Spain/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was born in Pilas, a town near Seville. Murillo was a disciple of Juan de Castillo, a painter of religious frescoes. Through Diego Velázquez, Murillo gained access to works by masters at the royal court, El Escorial, and other palaces. In Madrid, he copied several paintings by Van Dyck, Rubens and Titian. When he returned to Seville, he married Beatriz de Cabrera y Sotomayor and raised a large family. His original style of tenebrism eventually morphed into a lighter form of chiaroscuro. He co-founded the Academia de Bellas Artes in Seville, where he was elected President; Murillo is one of the most celebrated Spanish artists. They named the main entrance in the Museo del Prado in Madrid after Murillo. |
