Edvard Munch
1863-1944 Norway/Symbolism-Expressionism
|
Brief Biography-Edvard Munch Was a Norwegian Symbolist painter. The loss of his mother and sister due to tuberculosis as a child profoundly affected his work; the sick room stayed forever in his mind. His aunt Karen, who looked after the family, was an amateur artist and taught Edvard to draw. In 1881, he joined the State school of Arts and Crafts. In his early years, Edvard was under a great deal of pressure from his father, who was profoundly religious and critical of Edvard’s works, as were some of the local communities. However, he eventually received a scholarship to study in Paris, where various French artists greatly influenced him. Munch subsequently went to Germany, where his fortunes improved somewhat due to an uproar about his work at an exhibition in Berlin. It brought him the attention he needed.
Nevertheless, he was an unhappy man; he suffered from depression. One reason was the shooting off of one of his fingers by a lady friend Tulla Larson when they split up. He had a severe nervous breakdown in 1908 and entered a Clinic for a long spell, after which he settled in Norway. Sadly, he led a lonely life; later, his sight failed him, preventing him from painting. When he died in 1944, his collection went to Oslo city. In 1963, his works got displayed in the newly built Munch Museum in Oslo, where thousands of his paintings were displayed. |
