Alphonse Mucha
1860-1939 Czech Republic/Art-Nouveau
|
Brief Biography-Alphonse Mucha was born in Moravia, in what is now the Czech Republic, in 1860. He was principally a designer of posters in the Art Nouveau style. In Vienna, the artist Hans Makart influenced him, and in Munich, through a patron, Mucha frequented the Academy of Fine Arts. In Paris, he studied at the Académie Julian under Jules Lefebvre. Mucha illustrated books, commercial signs, and magazines. He also designed jewellery and stained glass. His most famous works were of the actress Sarah Bernhardt, and his most significant undertaking was The Slav Epic cycle, painted between 1912 to 1926, now in the National Gallery of Prague. Mucha died just before WW2 broke out in 1939. |
