Brief Biography-Hendrik Willem Mesdag was born in Groningen in 1831. He left banking in 1856 to take up painting. His master was Willem Roelofs, a member of The Hague School. By 1870 Mesdag was established as the foremost marine artist in the school. Then, in 1881, he painted an astonishing panoramic sea view of Scheveningen, 120 metres in circumference, still in The Hague. He became chairman of The Hague Art Society in 1889, and there is today a Museum Mesdag in the city. |
