Anna Lea Merritt

1844-1930 America/Pre-Raphaelite influence

Brief Biography-Anna Lea Merritt was born in Philadelphia, America, in 1844. She studied in Dresden and went to London in 1871, where she frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy. She married her English teacher Henry Merritt in 1877 and gave up painting, but he died the same year, and she recommenced painting for the remainder of her life in England. Merritt became one of only a few successful women artists in her time. Galleries well-received her work in England and America.
