Matteo di Giovanni
1430-1495 Italy/Early Renaissance
|
Brief Biography-Matteo di Giovanni, the son of a tinman, was born in Borgo San Sepolcro. He lived in Siena, where Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Vecchietta, influenced him strongly. In addition, Antonio del Pollaiuolo and possibly his younger brother Piero influenced Matteo's work. In 1465, he painted the wings of Piero della Francesca's polyptych, the Baptism of Christ. However, his most noted works were three variants of the Massacre of the Innocents, two of which are in Siena and the third in Naples. As a result, Matteo became the best Sienese painter of his generation, becoming known as Matteo da Siena. |
