Elias Martin
1739-1818 Sweden/Aquarelles-Landscapes
|
Brief Biography-Elias Martin was born in Stockholm in 1739. He was an etcher and landscape painter deeply impressed by Claude Lorrain; however, his watercolours outdid his oils. He stayed in England from 1768 to 1780, where he became an Associate of the Royal Academy and was impressed by Richard Wilson, which is evident in his landscapes. His etchings show the influence of William Hogarth. In Sweden, King Gustav III appointed him a Court painter. He gained notability for his views of Stockholm, which his younger brother Johann Friedrich Martin helped him publish. Martin also painted portraits, history, and genre pieces. |
