Hans Makart

1840-1884 Austria/Impressionism

 

Brief Biography-Hans Makart was born in Salzburg in 1840. He was a history and portrait painter whose style profoundly influenced Austrian painters, Gustave Klimt being the most famous. He first studied at the Vienna Academy in 1850, and in 1861, he became a disciple of Karl Theodor von Piloty at the Munch Academy. Makart was a highly esteemed painter, interior designer, and decorator to such an extent that his style characterised his era in Austrian art; it was the precursor of the Art Nouveau style.
