Brief Biography-James Edward Hervey MacDonald was born in Durham, England, in 1873. The family moved to Canada when he was a teenager. MacDonald studied in Hamilton and Toronto. He was made head designer at the Grip Design Company in Toronto, and he worked for a time in London, where he was impressed by the art he encountered there. In Canada, he was a founder of the Group of Seven, a group of artists who had worked together at the Grip Company; they were devoted to painting Canadian landscapes in various mountainous locations. In his last years, MacDonald was the principal of the College of Art in Ontario. His son Thoreau became a successful artist and illustrator. |
