Nikiforos Lytras

Brief Biography-Nikiforos Lytras was born on the island of Tinos. He studied at the Athens School of Art and gained a scholarship to learn at the Munich Academy, where he stayed until 1862. The Athens School of Arts appointed him a professor, and in 1873 he toured Anatolia or Southwest Asia with the artist Nikolaos Gyzis (1842-1901). In 1874 they spent a year in Munich and travelled to Paris in 1876. In 1879, Lytras visited Egypt before returning to Greece, where he married and had six children. One of his sons, Nikolaos, also became a renowned artist. He remained at the Athens School of Art until he died in 1904; Georgios Jakobides succeeded him. Nikiforos Lytras was one of the most famous Greek artists of his time. |
