Philip Jacques de Loutherbourg

Brief Biography-Philip Jacques de Loutherbourg was from Strasbourg. He was a stage designer and illustrator who worked in France and England. One of his teachers was Carle van Loo. Nicolaes Berchem and Francois Boucher inspired him; Claude Joseph Vernet and Salvator Rosa also influenced some of his works. He worked as a stage designer in the Drury Lane Theatre for fourteen years in London. Most of his paintings were landscapes and maritime scenes. In 1766, He became a member of the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. His work was noted chiefly for sea storms and sea battles. He died in England in 1812. |
