Brief Biography-Cristóvão Lopes of Lisbon was the son and pupil of Gregório Lopes. He was also a pupil of Alonso Sánchez Coello, trained under Anthonis Mor, the Dutch portraitist. On his father’s death, Cristóvão became a painter for King John III. He was principally a portraitist influenced by the mannerist style of Antwerp. His religious paintings are in the Chapel at Belem, and Royal portraits are on view in the Lisbon Museum of Ancient Art. |
