Brief Biography-Filippo Lippi, named Filippino or ‘the Young’, was born in Prato and is said to have been a disciple of Sandro Botticelli; he first studied with Fra Diamante in Prato. However, his father, Filippo influenced his work. His distinction was in the execution of frescos, notably in friezes. When his father died, he completed his tasks in the Spoleto Cathedral before going to Florence to study under Botticelli. His influence in Florence led him to replace Pietro Peruginowhen decorating the hall of Palazzo Pubblico. In 1487, he painted in the Strozzi Palace in Santa Maria Novella; from there, he spent time in Rome serving Cardinal Oliviero Carafa, doing frescos in his chapel in Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. In 1493, he returned to Florence and painted for the Confraternity of San Francesco at Palco. He assisted Perugino and Lorenzo di Credi in restoring the damaged lantern at Santa Maria del Fiore in 1498. One of his last tasks was the completion of his paintings at the Strozzi chapel. He died in Florence in 1504. His most famous painting is the Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Bernard in the Badia Fiorentina church in the centre of Florence. |
