Étienne Liotard

Brief Biography-Etienne Liotard was from Switzerland; born to French parents. He was notably a pastellist and studied in Geneva until 1723. Liotard spent three years in Paris, where one of his tutors was Francois Lemoyne. He travelled to Italy and painted a portrait of Pope Clement the Twelfth; from there, he went on to the Greek islands and did chalk drawings of Eastern flavour. Liotard lived in Istanbul up until 1742, where Oriental art influenced him. In 1758 he returned to Geneva, occasionally travelling to Paris and England. In his later years, he painted stil life. |
