|
Brief Biography-Jan August Hendrik Leys was from Antwerp, Belgium. He studied under Ferdinand de Braekeleer the Elder, who was his brother-in-law and at the Art Academy of Antwerp. Leys worked with Egide Charles Gustave Wappers and spent time in Paris, where Romanticism influenced him. He later went towards a realism style in which his work became more associated, leading to a successful career in Belgium and France. He was made a Baron in 1862 in appreciation for his historical paintings.
Amongst his numerous students were Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Henri Jean Augustin de Braekeleer, son of Ferdinand. In addition, he had a powerful influence on the Swedish artist Georg von Rosen who entered his workshop in 1863. |
