Sir Thomas Lawrence
1769-1830 England/Neoclassicism-Portraitist
|
Brief Biography-Sir Thomas Lawrence was born in Bristol in 1769. As a boy in Bath, he was drawing in pastel at his father’s inn, and in 1787 he made his way to London. His classical art failed, so after remaining in portraiture, his profession excelled. The King patronised him, and he became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, and he replaced Sir Joshua Reynolds on his death as Painter in Ordinary to the King two years later. In 1794, his presentation A Gipsy Girl made him an Academician. Then, in 1815, the prince Regent knighted him. He spent time in Italy, where he painted Pope Pius VII, and on his return to London, the Royal Academy elected him as president. Sir Thomas Lawrence lies alongside Sir Joshua Reynold in Saint Paul’s Cathedral. |
