Kawanabe Kyōsai 河鍋 暁斎

1831-1889 Japan/Edo to Meiji Period

 

Brief Biography-Kawanabe Kyōsai was born at Koga in 1831. He trained at the Kanō School. Katsushika Hokusai influenced his paintings, and he became a caricaturist. However, the shogunate authorities arrested him due to his political parodies. Kyōsai later worked for magazines doing cartoons for various subjects. He wrote a successful piece named Kyōsai’s Treatise on Painting, including a part autobiography.
