Brief Biography-Toyohara Kunichika was born in Kyōbashi, Tokyo in 1835. He lived through the Edo period into the Meiji period as an ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock print artist. He trained in the workshop of Utagawa Kunisada. In 1867, he entered ten works at the World Exhibition in Paris and exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. He was most famous for his actor portraits. He later collaborated with Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, the last great master of the ukiyo-e genre of prints and painting. He died in 1900 due to ill health and much drinking. |
