Brief Biography-Julius Sergius von Klever was born in Tartu, Estonia. His father, a chemist, had him enter the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg to study architecture, but Julius decided he preferred landscape painting. He was expelled from the Academy in 1871 for an undisclosed reason, and Julius went on to exhibit his works, which proved to be a success, and he came to the attention of Tsar Alexander II. He was named an Academician in 1878, and Tsar Alexander III purchased further works. He subsequently became a professor at the Academy. His studio was inundated with orders until an associate caused him to become implicated in a financial scandal in the 1890s. He ceased painting, fled to Germany under duress, and returned in 1915. He spent the remainder of his life teaching at the Academy under the new Soviet administration. His primary output was landscapes. |
