Brief Biography-Georgios Jakobides was born at Lesbos in 1853. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Nikiforos Lytras and proceeded to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where Nikolaos Gyzisand Lytras had become professors. He enjoyed many successful years in Munich, achieving considerable sums for his paintings. In 1900, he returned to Athens to become Director of the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1904. He was famous for his family genre scenes up to this time; however, he turned to portraiture in Greece, painting Greek royalty and nobility. Jakobides won numerous awards throughout his career, and his works hang in many of the world’s galleries. |
