Henry Inman

1801-1846 America/Romanticism

Brief Biography-Henry Inman was born in New York State of English descent in 1801. He studied under John Wesley Jarvis in New York City, where he settled and married in 1822. Inman took on several students and helped establish the National Academy of Design when his apprenticeship was over, becoming vice president in 1826. He spent three years in the Philadelphia print business, but his land investments proved a failure due to the recession of 1837, leading to financial restraints. Inman travelled to England in 1844, where Inman painted Scottish landscape studies and portraits in London for a year. He died back in New York at the young age of forty-five.
