Brief Biography-Samuel Dirksz van Hoogstraten, a painter of the Dutch Golden Age, was a native of Dordrecht. His artist father, Dirk, initially taught him, and he later became a disciple of Rembrandt. The works of Gabriël Metsu and Pieter de Hooch influenced him. He travelled to Italy, Austria, and England before settling in Dordrecht. Other talents included poetry and etching; he was a director of the mint in Dordrecht. He is renowned for his Trompe-l’oeil paintings. Pupils of his were Aert de Gelder and Godfried Schalcken. |
