|
Brief Biography-William Hoare was born in Suffolk in 1706. Giuseppe Grisoni was his master in London, and during nine years in Italy, he drew several copies of great Italian masters before returning to London. Hoare was sometimes painted in crayon but was unsuccessful in London, and in 1738 settled in Bath, becoming the preeminent portraitist of the city until Gainsborough arrived in 1760. He co-founded the Royal Academy and regularly exhibited his works there. |
