Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川 広重
1797-1858 Japan/Ukiyo-e
|
Brief Biography-Utagawa (Ando) Hiroshige was born in Edo, what is now Tokyo in 1797. He was an Ukiyo-e artist and co-founder of the Utagawa School. The prints of Katsushika Hokusai had a profound influence on his work. His early works concentrated on beautiful women, and his later images are mainly of colourful landscapes, for which he became most famous. Hiroshige was the last and foremost artist of Ukiyo-e art, and his prints had a lasting influence on many western impressionist painters.
Japonisme, a French word pronounced Japon-ease-ma, became prevalent in the mid-nineteenth century, and impressionist painters were interested in Japanese art. Posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec exemplify Japanese influence on western art. The French art critic, painter, and supporter of impressionism, Zacharie Astruc, was a proponent of Japonisme. Some examples of its impact on impressionists are -
The Klimt cartoon for the Stoclet frieze is similar to Ogata Korin's Plum Trees by a Stream.
Harry Clarke’s A.E. Poe Tales of Imagination became influenced by Japanese stencil work.
James Whistler’s studies of porcelain; he had an extensive porcelain collection at home.
Manet and Monet were emulators of Hokusai’s prints. Monet had more than two hundred Japanese prints in his dining room at Giverny.
In Manet’s Musique aux Tuileries and Hokusai’s Fuji Through Bamboo, in theory, there are similarities in the lie of trees.
There are associations between Cotton-Goods Lane by Gustave Caillebotte and Odenma-Cho by Hiroshige.
Van Gogh’s Bridge in the Rain is a direct copy of Hiroshige’s Sudden Evening Shower on the Great Bridge near Ataki. Van Gogh also painted Flowering Plum Orchard after Hiroshige’s The Residence with Plum Trees at Kameido. The tree also influenced Paul Gauguin’s The Vision of the Sermon in the same print.
James Tissot was another Japanese art painter.
