Brief Biography-Joseph Heintz, the Elder, was born in Basel in 1565, the son of an architect. Hans Boch tutored him in Basel, and Johann von Aachen was his mentor in Rome while he studied the Italian Masters. In Prague in 1590, the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II appointed him a Court Painter. The monarch sent him to Rome in 1593 to procure art pieces, where he remained for several years. On his return to Prague, he worked principally as an architect between there and Augsburg. His paintings ranged from mythological to religious subjects, including portraiture. |
