Brief Biography-William Michael Harnett was renowned for his trompe-l’oeil still lifes. Soon after being born in Cork, Ireland, his family moved to Philadelphia. He worked as a silverware engraver while studying at the Academy of Fine Arts before going to the National Academy of Design and the Cooper Union. His most productive period of work was in Germany between 1880 and 1886. Then, he returned to America, where his work influenced other artists, most notably his friend and colleague from Philadelphia, John Frederick Peto. Unfortunately, his output slowed later in life due to illness, and he died in New York in 1892. Jefferson David Chalfant was another renowned artist who Harnett influenced. |
