Nikolaos Gyzis

Νικόλαος Γύζης

1842-1901 Greece/Orientalism

 

Brief Biography-Nikolaos Gyzis was born on the Greek island of Tinos in 1842. He first studied at the School of Fine Arts in Athens and moved to the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, in 1865. After a long spell in Greece, where he succeeded in painting many Greek subjects, he returned to Munich and became a professor at the Academy in 1886. He was a significant figure in the Munich School, consisting mainly of Greek artists painting in western styles not associated with Byzantine influences. Gryzis lived in Munich for the remainder of his life.
