Francesco Lazzaro Guardi
1712-1793 Italy/Rococo
|
Brief Biography-Francesco Lazzaro Guardi came from a family of painters. He worked in his father’s workshop under his older brother Gian Antonio. They were all veduta painters; Francesco followed Canaletto and Luca Carlevarijs. His style was more moderate and less rigid than his masters, but his perspective was not accurate to the same extent; he had been painting religious works with his older brother before his death in 1760. Guardi worked in the atelier of Michele Marieschi for eight years and received many commissions from notables in Venice. However, he mainly painted views of Venice for travelling grand tourists later in his life. His sister Maria married Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, who would also have influenced his work. Guardi died in Venice in 1793. His works became more appreciated with the onset of impressionism in the next century. |
