Antoine Jean Gros
1771-1835 France/Neoclassicism
|
Brief Biography-Antoine Jean Gros was from Paris; his father, a miniaturist, taught him at an early age. When he was fourteen, he became a student of Jacques Louis David. At twenty-two, Gros travelled to Italy, where Napoleon engaged him as his war painter. He took over the role of David as Napoleon’s Premier Painter. His paintings of the Napoleonic wars are the most striking of the time. He returned to Paris in 1799, and when Napoleon was later defeated, he used David’s studio after he went into exile in Brussels. He had great respect for David; he was a father figure to him, and he felt lost without his guidance. David wrote to him to encourage him to paint ancient historical subjects, but he was in despair with fear of failure and committed suicide by drowning himself in the Seine. |
