|
Brief Biography-Aert de Gelder from Dordrecht, Holland, was born in 1645. He first studied under Samuel Dirksz van Hoogstratenin his hometown and finished his apprenticeship under Rembrandt in Amsterdam within two years. Unlike most of Rembrandt’s students who abandoned his style on leaving his studio, Gelder continued with his style throughout his life. He painted portraits and Biblical works and surrounded his studio walls with items to paint as backdrops in his paintings. Gelder was a successful portraitist, and his works were sometimes mistakenly attributed to Rembrandt. He died in Amsterdam in 1727. |
