Wybrand de Geest

1592-1661 Holland/Baroque

Brief Biography-Wybrand de Geest was one of the finest portrait artists of the Dutch Golden Age. He was from Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, where he spent most of his life. His glazier father gave him his early education, and he later studied art under Abraham Bloemaert. After that, he travelled to France and Italy. When in Rome, he was a member of the Bentveughels, the society of Dutch artists. When he returned to Leeuwarden, he became a court painter to the Calvinist Frisian Nassau. Two of his sons and a grandson also became painters. His wife Hendrickje Fransdr Uylenburgh was a niece of Rembrandt.
